Sometimes you meet someone and you know right away that they are going to be a great asset to your business.  This is how we felt when we first met Owen Segerstrom, owner of Down the Mountain Farmstead.

Down the Mountain Farmstead is a diversified, 160-acre small scale farming operation on the east side of Surprise Valley.  It is home to Owen Segerstrom and Hannah Curcio and their sons Clavey (age 9) and Cole (age 6) as well as pigs, dairy cows, goats, ducks, chickens, bees, gardens, and the all-important farm dog, Sage. The crew at Down the Mountain Farmstead is passionate about healthy ecosystems, thriving people, and delicious food.

Down the Mountain Farmstead’s flagship product is free-range, organically-fed pork.  These happy hogs have round-the-clock access to pasture, supplemented by local, organic alfalfa and organic barley and oats (sourced from Arreche Hay Co. in Surprise Valley and the Woodhouse family in Tulelake), and the secret ingredient-surplus raw goat milk from fellow Modoc Harvest Food Hub producer Curds and Whey Farmstead Dairy.

The intergenerational herd can be seen grazing the hillsides of the farmstead. Down the Mountain Farmstead pork has been featured at The Fatted Calf and Bi-Rite in San Francisco, among other quality meat vendors, but its owners’ passion remains the local food system in Modoc County.

We are proud to be selling Down the Mountain Farmstead's amazing pastured pork on our website and thrilled to have Owen & Hannah as partners in the greater regenerative movement!
